Our Vision
Everyone here is a learner.
Everyone here is a teacher.
Together we are champions...
-
of knowledge,
of our communities,
of our environment,
of our future.
Our Mission
Our mission is to raise bilingual and biliterate young people who are well prepared to pursue a university education and to take their place as responsible, caring members of their various communities.
Who we are
Reach Academy opened in 2005 with 120 students in grades K-2. In 2006 we will serve 200 students in grades K-3. We plan to grow to 360 students in grades K-5. Reach Academy is situated in deep east Oakland, on 98th Ave. This communiy is one of Alameda County’s lowest income neighborhoods with an average per capita income of $14,228 (compared to $26,680 countywide). Almost one-quarter of the families in our attendance area live in poverty. About 80% of our-students receive free or reduced price lunch. Currently, our enrollment is 74% African American, 24% Latino, and 1% other
A team of parents, educators, community members, and organizers designed Reach Academy. Knowing that student academic performance in this neighborhood has historically been quite low we focused on creating a school capable of helping all children learn and achieve at their full potential. From the outset, our vision was to create a school…
- with strong roots in the community,
- with strong parent and community involvement in shaping the school program,
- where children would be intellectually stimulated and challenged, and
- where they would have access to art, music, and sports,
- where the extended day program reinforces and extends the learning students do during the day,
- and that prepares all of our students to be successful throughout school up to and including the college or university of their choice.
Our program
During the day our students engage in reading, writing, and math workshops that give each child the ability to work at his or her own level while supporting each child to meet high academic standards. We are an Arts Anchor School, so we integrate art into all other areas of the curriculum and use art as a tool to leverage learning in other content areas. In our extended day program, all students learn to speak, read, and write Spanish. Reach students also learn to read and play music and they go to a computer class.
Donations to Reach Academy will help fund
- Extended day sports program
- Tutoring for students who need extra support
- Uniforms for needy families
- A Family coordinator
- A school counselor
