Oakland International High School (OIHS) is a new small school for recent immigrants from many different countries who are learners of English. OIHS will support students and their families while preparing them to meet all state graduation requirements.

OIHS students learn English in all their content classes. Working in small groups, students learn academic content, art, music and technology through exciting, rigorous, hands-on projects as they learn their new language. OIHS students have opportunities for internships and community service in different settings, from businesses to government offices to community organizations.

At OIHS, teachers and students work on teams so that all students are provided support and guidance. Teachers and students know each other well and develop strong relationships that ensure student growth and success. OIHS will provide a safe, supportive environment that prepares immigrant youth for college, work and participation in a democratic American society and the world.

IMMIGRATION GRAPHIC NOVEL
Each year, our art class completes a graphic novel unit. Students write and illustrate their immigration stories.

As a fund raiser, we are offering a published compilation of “The Best Immigration Stories.” Students from China, Burma, Russia, Guatemala, Yemen, Mongolia, Morocco, and El Salvador made contributions explaining their reasons for immigration: to be united with family and to escape racism, poverty, terrorism, and war.

Purchased a copy here. Half of the proceeds pay for the cost of publishing and half support purchasing new art supplies for the class.
