Manzanita Community Elementary School (MCS) is a new small school opened in 2006, and shares its site with Manzanita SEED Elementary. We are a school that strives to grow intelligent, caring citizens. We offer weekly physical education and art curriculum for all of our students.

Our Vision
At Manzanita Community Elementary, all children will be high performing and excited about learning and going to school. They will feel that school is a safe and positive place for them physically, emotionally, and intellectually. They will feel connected to the school through positive relationships with peers and staff members.

Theory of Action
At Manzanita Community we believe that the social and emotional development of our students is at the core of strong academic performance. When children feel a part of their school they develop trust and caring relationships that foster community building and a positive school climate. A positive school climate provides a learning environment that allows focused and rigorous academic program.

All of our teachers receive ongoing training in Responsive Classroom Strategies. These strategies include school-wide morning meetings with students to help them to develop skills and strategies for problem solving, conflict resolution, and communication. It also provides a daily consistent transition from home to school for the entire student body.

Demographics
Manzanita Community serves students primarily from the San Antonio and Fruitvale districts in Oakland. Like our neighborhoods, our school is very diverse. Our largest groups of students are Latino (43%) and African American (32%), and we also have significant numbers of Asian and Pacific Islander students (17%). Manzanita Community also has a diverse language community. Almost half (46%) of Manzanita students speak English as a second language.
