At Mandela High, we want our students to be successful in the world as it is, but also to think critically about confronting what is unjust. To be literate is to be empowered. By literacy, we mean the ability to read critically, to be fluent in "academic English," and to write for a variety of purposes. Consequently, at Mandela, literacy is infused into all subjects, and all classes focus on understanding content, developing vocabulary, and engagement in the reading process. We believe that improved literacy will lead to improved proficiency in math as well. We use strategies often associated with language arts, such as written explanation, to clarify, question, and show understanding in all classes. The school's focus on language and literacy includes a strong foreign language program whose goal is to design curriculum leading to biliteracy certification.
Mandela High is a place where everyone works to ensure that our students have the ability to enter college and/or pursue their career goals. Our school is organized and designed to facilitate and enable teachers to teach and students to learn. We have a college prep program that focuses on the classroom. Students are taught to be effective communicators and responsible to themselves and others
