Associate Director

Join a hard-working team of professionals that has raised more than $20 million for low-income Oakland public schools over the past eight years. The Oakland Schools Foundation is a dynamic non-profit organization serving more than 40 Oakland public schools and partnering with the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD). We provide support for community outreach and marketing, grants and donor development, collaborative programming, and leadership, operational, and financial coaching services for schools. OSF support services are designed to help school staff access and manage resources to meet many needs that are typically unfunded in our public schools. OSF currently has six fulltime staff and two part time staff. In the next year, OSF will serve over 40 schools, their principals, teachers, and more than 14,000 students and their families and communities.

POSITION OVERVIEW
The full-time Associate Director position is at-will and exempt and is supervised by the Executive Director. This position is based at the OSF office in North Oakland, but requires some travel to school sites, partners’ offices, and events venues. The Associate Director (AD) will have responsibility for developing and managing the work of the organization in the areas of (1) program development and implementation and (2) client services for schools. The AD will also collaborate with the Executive Director regularly on the organizational strategy and operations and on the development of relationships and services for OUSD. This position works closely with the Executive Director and the Board of Directors and will have a high level of independence, responsibility, and decision-making authority. It is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to use his/her initiative and creativity to grow and strengthen a non-profit that has a great staff and an important mission!
Responsibilities of this position include:
• Manage (with staff) the services that we provide to schools in Oakland. This includes (1) developing annual service agreements with 30-40 schools; (2) implementation of those services over the course of the year; (3) continually assessing and improving the service offerings to provide support to schools to achieve their goals; (4) continually assessing and adjusting the costs and fees charged for these services to ensure they are financially viable for OSF; (5) regularly assessing client satisfaction, including at least semi-annual client surveys. Current services are described on the OSF website at www.oaklandschoolsfoundation.org.
• Manage (with staff support) our program offerings, which currently include primarily our two main collaborative programs, the Family Engagement and Leadership Initiative (FamELI) (11 schools) and the Extended Learning Collaborative (12 schools). This includes (1) developing and implementing the annual plans for each collaborative in ways that meet the needs of participating schools and of program donors; (2) carrying out regular assessments of progress and supporting the development staff in grant reporting and applications.
• Work with staff and the Executive Director to develop projects and productive relationships with key community partners (e.g., other nonprofits working in Oakland) and with staff at OUSD.
• Participate, with the Executive Director, the Director of Finance and Administration and the Manager, Development, in guiding the overall operations of OSF.
• Manage a staff of 3-5 that handles programs and client services, along with a few part-time consultants. Provide staff a strong day-to-day leadership presence and provide strategic leadership.
• Lead the performance management process that measures and evaluates progress against goals for the organization as a whole (approved annually by our Board of Directors)
• Work with the Finance team to make regular improvements to the data systems that support OSF’s service delivery for clients. Our current technology infrastructure exists as a SalesForce database and needs to be updated regularly to synchronize with our finance software and with our service processes.

QUALIFICATIONS
• Client Service: Demonstrated capacity and success in providing high-quality and responsive service to clients.
• Business Understanding: High level of business acumen, including successful P&L management and the ability to balance the delivery of programs against the realities of a budget; problem solving, project management, and creative resourcefulness.
• Results—proven track record of exceeding goals and a bottom-line orientation; evidence of the ability to consistently make good decisions through a combination of analysis, wisdom, experience, and judgment.
• Communications, Community Outreach, Partnership Development: understanding of the basics of marketing and communications strategies, and experience in preparing or managing others in the preparation and execution of communications strategies. Experience with building organizational relationships.
• Varied experience with public education – preferably in Oakland -- is highly valuable, to strengthen the candidates ability to understand our school and OUSD clients and to partner with the ED in guiding the future direction of OSF.
• Strategic Vision and Agility—ability to think strategically, anticipate future consequences and trends, and incorporate them into the organizational plan.
• Capacity Building—ability to effectively build organization and staff capacity, developing a top-notch workforce as well as the processes that ensure the organization runs smoothly
• Leadership and Organization—exceptional capacity for managing and leading people; a team builder who has experience in scaling up organizations; ability to connect staff both on an individual level and in large groups; capacity to enforce accountability, develop and empower top-notch leaders from the bottom up, cultivate entrepreneurship, and learn the strengths and weaknesses of the team so as to put people in a position to succeed. The successful candidate will most likely have had management experience with a for-profit organization.
• Action Oriented—enjoys working hard and looks for challenges; able to act and react as necessary, even if limited information is available; not afraid to take charge of a situation; can overcome resistance to leadership and take unpopular stands when necessary
• General Management—understanding and experience with finance, systems, and HR; broad experience with the full range of business functions and systems, including strategic development and planning, budgeting, business analysis, finance, information systems, human resources, and marketing
• Solid educational background—undergraduate degree required; MBA or similar advanced degree highly desired
• Experience working with ethnically diverse communities, clients and organizations is highly valuable.
• As noted, this is an organization driven by the values of its people, so experience in managing a “values driven” organization will be highly prized
• Must have valid driver’s license, proof of car insurance and use of an automobile
• Must demonstrate the ability to meet and maintain federal, state, local and Oakland School Foundation guidelines including, but not limited to, fingerprint clearance and negative TB test

COMPENSATION
$ 70,000-80,000 annual salary, depending on experience; full-time 40 hours per week, plus benefits.

Client Resources Manager

Position Overview:
The Client Resources Manager is full-time and exempt. This position is responsible for (1) program development and implementation for grant-funded activities that OSF manages with schools and with OUSD; (2) school district and community partnership development; (3) evaluation and data analysis for grant-funded programs; and management of school services for a group of OSF partner schools.

This position reports to the Associate Director and will work closely with the OSF Development team. The position responsibilities will likely evolve over time as OSF’s priorities and grant-funding change. We seek a self-motivated, client-oriented professional with flexibility and creativity, whose responsibilities will include the following:

Responsibilities:
• Manage and develop grant-funded professional learning community programs in school-family partnerships, academic intervention, and other school programming
• Lead and facilitate strategic planning for OSF programs
• Lead and facilitate programs team
• Manage and monitor requirements for grant-funded district and school programs
• Manage grant-funded program evaluation and data analysis
• Write grant reports
• Supervise contracted program managers, coaches, and consultants
• Secure and manage partnerships with school district departments
• Secure and manage partnerships with community-based organizations
• Support relationship development with granting foundations
• Develop and inform organizational evaluation metrics
• Lead, facilitate, and manage school district partnerships in grant-funded program development and implementation, and strategic planning
• Participate on school district task forces and advisories
• Manage portfolio of client schools with services in community outreach and resource development

Qualifications:
• Bachelors Degree of relevant area and/ or equivalent work experience
• Experience working with public schools; analytical or management experience with schools is particularly valued.
• Excellent written and oral communication; must be able to communicate articulately and sensitively with clients and co-workers
• At ease with tracking, project management, finance/budgets, and record-keeping systems
• High-level facility with Excel required; Power Point, Illustrator, data base experience ideal
• Successful background in community and customer relations, project management, organizational development, creative numbers-crunching, and fundraising or other kinds of campaigns
• Analytical experience is highly desirable, particularly in analyzing program progress, policies, data, etc.
• Ability to multi-task and meet hard deadlines in a fast-paced environment
• Ability to organize assignments and prioritize work effectively
• Must have valid driver’s license, proof of car insurance and use of an automobile
• Demonstrate the ability to meet and maintain federal, state, local and Oakland School Foundation guidelines including, but not limited to, fingerprint clearance and negative TB test

Compensation:

$48,000 to $56,000 depending on experience

Development Manager (Temporary)

The Oakland Schools Foundation is a dynamic, growing non-profit organization serving more than 40 Oakland public schools. We provide support for community outreach and marketing, grants and donor development, collaborative programming, and leadership, operational, and financial coaching services for schools. OSF support services are designed to help school staff access and manage resources to meet many needs that are typically unfunded in our public schools. OSF currently has eight fulltime staff and two part time staff. In the next year, OSF will serve 40 schools, their principals, teachers, and more than 14,000 students, their families and communities.

We are looking for a hard-working, development professional who will serve in a temporary capacity on a part-time basis (expected to be three days per week) over a five- to six-month period to meet the needs of Oakland schools while our current Development Manager is on maternity leave. The Temporary Development Manager will be responsible for managing the Development Department, including the supervision of two staff, writing and editing grants and reporting on programs for our schools and for OSF, developing budgets, monitoring grant-funded school programs, understanding and tracking information in our Salesforce database, participating in program development as necessary, being a creative member of the team, working directly with school and program leaders, and providing other support, as needed to the OSF team and to schools.

The part-time Temporary Development Manager position is at-will and exempt and is supervised by the Executive Director. This position is based at the OSF office in Oakland, but requires some travel to school sites, partners’ offices, and events venues.

QUALIFICATIONS
OSF seeks an experienced development professional who is highly detail-oriented, organized, a skilled writer, editor, and project manager, and has experience supervising a team and managing and tracking a complex caseload of grant funded programs. We are looking for someone with the following qualifications:
• Bachelors Degree of relevant area and/ or equivalent work experience
• Five years of development experience, including supervision of a team
• Experience with public education and familiarity with educational programs and outcomes
• Excellent written and oral communication, must be able to communicate articulately and sensitively with clients and co-workers
• Ability to multi-task and meet hard deadlines in a fast-paced environment
• Ability to manage team to complete assignments and prioritize work effectively
• Ability to maintain a high degree of quality and superior attention to detail in work

COMPENSATION
Three days a week, $40,000 - $48,000 pro-rated annual salary. Temporary maternity leave position starting February 13, 2012 or any date thereafter.
