2010 California Standards Test (CST) scores rose for the public schools working closely with the Oakland Schools Foundation (OSF). These 34 schools' students outpaced state averages, improving proficiency rates by four percent in English Language Arts (ELA) and by six percent in Math, compared to two percent in both ELA and Math, state-wide.
OSF schools' results reflect a broader positive trend: City-wide, Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) schools improved proficiency rates in both ELA and Math, continuing the steady improvement that has made OUSD California’s most improved large, urban school district over the past five years.
Highlights from OSF's 34 network schools:
• Twenty-six OSF schools (77 percent) moved students into the "Proficient" and "Advanced" range in Math, and 71 percent did so in ELA.
• Seventy-six percent of schools moved students out of "Below Basic" levels in Math, and 73 percent made similar strides in ELA.
• Manzanita SEED Elementary moved more students into "Proficient" and "Advanced" (a 29-percent increase) in Math than any other school in the district.
• Eighty-nine percent of OSF middle schools showed marked improvement in ELA and Math, with Alliance Academy, Elmhurst Community Prep, Frick Middle School, and United for Success Academy all posting particularly significant gains.
"In our work with schools, OSF is continually inspired by Oakland students and by our schools' leaders, so it is no surprise to see Oakland Unified's CST scores rise yet again," says OSF Executive Director Dan Quigley. "We believe our collaboration with schools around community and family engagement, leadership, and resources development has been a factor in our schools' achievement growth."
